Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
