Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
